In reaction to the news that the Weekly World News has folded, I bring you this, a brief exploration of juvenile lover-of-the ridiculous that lives inside me — inside us all!

A stylish young woman was ahead of me in line at Von’s a few months ago. She caught my eye as I noticed that she was laughing quietly to herself. I did a cellphone/bluetooth check, and oddly, she wasn’t talking to anyone — just shaking with amusement. I finally zeroed in on the source: one of the standard, ludicrous headlines in the Weekly World News:

Hillary Clinton names Bigfoot as Running Mate! Hillary/Bigfoot in ’08

I mean, it’s totally goofy. But it just got her, you know? I love that moment when you’re just open to that random humor flyby.
