sum sum summertime
My favorite solstice memory.
In 2009, I was at the International Improv Fest in Seattle. We had our last show on Saturday the 20th of June. It was an extraordinary evening; the connection I felt to my friends and fellow improvisers was magical. After the show, we hung out at the theatre and ate and talked and drank and refused to break up the party. Finally, at about 4:30am, my friends Trenton, Masako and I headed back to the hostel, which was only a block away. Trenton (from California) is very tall and often loud; Masako (from Japan) is small and often quiet — however, that’s due to the language barrier more than her natural self.
As we headed up the sidewalk, we noticed it was already starting to get light (Washington is way up to the north). Somebody realized, now that it was the 21st, that it was the Solstice. Trenton immediately started dancing and twirling in the best hippie-celebrating-Mother-Earth style. He started charging up the street, shouting “let’s get naked!” Masako and I ran after him, laughing hysterically and joining him in the dancing and twirling.
Snap went my mental camera. I will never forget the picture of us of laughing and dancing, running through the lightening dark.
