music week! day 07

Casette tapes
five years of rock

Age 14: I compliment Barry Gibb on his gigantic, diamond-encrusted eagle necklace. I want to be nice (as he is so nice), but it is the ugliest thing I have ever seen.

Age 15: I cry and cry when I find out my wisdom teeth extraction is happening the same date as The Specials‘ appearance Saturday Night Live — I had a plan to stalk them as they came and went from the television studio.

Age 16: I procure three tickets to see Joe Jackson. I invite my best friend SD, and screw up my courage to invite DD, on whom I had a raging crush for four solid years. SD screws up and manages to sit between DD and me the whole night. If this hadn’t happened, I feel strongly that I would be Mrs. DD today.

Age 17: I tell my dad I am leaving early for school to get “math help.” I then skip high school for the first time in my life to wait 11 hours in line (while braving the riot police) for tickets to see The Clash at Bond’s Casino in Times Square.

Age 18: I pimp my stepsister to go and flirt with the roadie for Fun Boy Three so we could get backstage. It doesn’t work, and Fun Boy Three break up the next day, on the plane back to England. Coincidence … or was it?

Ah, the things I have done for love. I hope you have enjoyed this Music Week!

I KNEW you were responsible for the break-up of Fun Boy Three! I’ve been waiting so long for confirmation of that fact. At last, at last.
