random craft cruft (or Quilt Report 4.B: Science Quilt)

tag gun

I have promised the loverly Regina that I would finish my Science Quilt by the end of May, and I’m sticking to it. Things that are making it easy:

  • This tag gun thingie that I bought ages ago but just started using. Sort of like the gun above, but it shoots itty bitty tags that, in essence, pins the layers of the quilt together. Anyway, the pure joy of not getting poked by those mean quilt pins every flipping second makes this stage much more bearable. Never fun, but bearable.
  • A spacious, flat, hard surface on which I could layout, tape and pin the quilt. I was sitting in my office, thinking to myself “I wonder where I can find a spacious, flat, hard surface on which I can finish my quilt?” My office is above our improv theater. The theater sports spacious, flat, hard surfaces galore. I’m smart!
  • The Ventura County Fair — they just released their entry forms for all the exhibits. I’m going to enter the Science Quilt in Division 405 (Quilts, Professional), Class 4 (Machine pieced, machine quilted.) That’s right! We’ll turn the sunflower-lovin’, pastel colored, supertraditional Ventura quilt community on their ear!

Speaking of the Fair, it’s mighty hard not to fill out an entry form for all the awesome categories, including

  • DIVISION 395 – NEEDLEPOINT ARTICLES
    Class 1: Bell Pull
  • DIVISION 427 – CANNED MEATS
  • DIVISION 324 – DRESSED PORCELAIN DOLLS
Class 10: Baby Doll, Head Only
  • DIVISION 371 – DECORATED CANDY BOX
Class 2: Filled decorated box made of candy
  • LIGHTWEIGHT RABBITS
Class 155 – Netherland Dwarf, Shaded
(Please note: non-medicated or whitening shampoo is acceptable for animal washing.)

Let me tell you, if you have a desire for a prize, you can get one at the fair. There are hundreds upon hundreds of categories. If I get a blue ribbon, I’m going to wear it around for the rest of the year.

Oh, and there are a few new thingies in the Mockorage Etsy shop, including robot potholders! Turquoise (whom I coerced into entering in the Fair’s DIVISION 308 – TABLESETTING COMPETITION) and I have been hard at work. More to come!

Good luck at the fair, especially with the quilt! I’d say “Give ’em hell!” but I think “Give ’em science!” may serve equally well.

Can I preorder wave two of the robot potholder? It’s a must-have!
