eek!tober 2009: repurposed horror
Three years ago I celebrated the spooooky Halloween season by reminiscing about movies that scared me for traditional (and nontraditional) reasons.
- October 6th 2006: screamtober: dr. cyclops
- October 12th 2006: octobrrrrr: nightmare (1964)
- October 24th 2006: octNO!ber: interiors
- October 28th 2006: acktober: don’t look now
This year, I’ve collected some random thingies of a YouTube nature that may cause thrills, terror, shivers, nightsweats, chilblains, hysteria, rickets, and/or the vapors. I’ll be presenting them throughout the week.
In this episode, let’s examine fear where there was not fear previously. Take, for example, a reimagining of Diff’rent Strokes:
And When Harry Met Sally…
And then, the other side of the same coin; reimagining a horror flick (like The Shining) as a romantic comedy:
Those were the best movie trailers I’ve ever seen! I can’t decide which is better. I love the peppy voice of the announcer in The Shining, but I also love the eerie overtones in When Harry Met Sally.
It’s incredible how music can set the mood. Naturally I loved the Diff’rent Strokes beginning especially when Mr. Bain put his arms around the boys and looked back over his shoulder. (And how edgy and urban was that dropping the first e in Different?)
Lastly, when I am watching a scary movie and I just can’t handle the musical suspense I do mute that mofo until the killer hops out from behind the refrigerator. Subtitles are not nearly as scary.
Spooky! I wanna see more pics of your pumpkin! Incidentally, where have I been? I somehow missed all the Q&A excitement over at CG’s house.
What’s Gocco??
Totally, C-Girl. I have a patented system in which I turn down the volume and/or close my ears with my thumbs while peeking through my fingers like the little wimp that I am.
Your loss, Cloudy!
LJ: Gooco is a Japanese silkscreen printing system that was very popular for a few years. I pulled my Gooco cards off my Etsy shop temporarily but you can see a picture here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/hambox/3975390276/
PS You can search on http://www.etsy.com under “handmade” for the word “gocco” and you will see hundreds, if not thousands, of examples!

I love all of these! Thanks for the links, Ms. hambox…
