guilty pleasures: the men
At the end of November last year, as I was scrounging for ideas to feed the relentless toddler that was NaBloPoMo, I offered up Guilty Pleasures I and II, listings of people/places/things that I felt cringing embarrassment at liking. I stand by my tastes, as … unusual … as they may be.
And now I offer a short list of men, unlikely men, that have captured my fancy over the years as objets d’crush.
I don’t really remember making it through an entire episode of F-Troop, but Larry caught my eye at some point as a child. I liked his hoarse voice (reminiscent of Mickey Dolenz) and lanky frame.
Frank Sutton as Sgt. Carter from Gomer Pyle, USMC
The man-in-uniform thing. So cliche, but very effective. Perhaps some Freudians can shed some light on my attraction to a high-status symbol of machismo, who is continually thwarted by a man-child (Gomer).
Robert Reich, economist and former Secretary of Labor under Clinton
All 4 foot 10.5 inches of him. I have a weakness for tiny smart guys. Gonna put him in my pocket!
Herbert Lom, in character as anyone evil
He was the go-to bad guy for years. Less attractive while inhabiting the role of hapless Chief Inspector in the Pink Panther movies. Big pluses: general, unidentifiable European accent (see also: Yul Brynner), and sloe-eyed pouty look (see also: George Raft)
Already mentioned before in Guilty Pleasures II. Just wanted to include a picture of him here. What a man.

joel grey (Cabaret). michael flately (shucks, what can I say? I was young! I like narcissists!). michael landon (Little House on the Prarie). michael cain (Educating Rita). sean astin (goonies). howard keel (Kiss Me Kate). Stewart Finlay-McLennan (Christie – the t.v. series. i know it’s embarrassing, that’s why I’m putting it here.)
Anthony Perkins (Psycho era), Alan Greenspan, Bill Bixby (Courtship of Eddie’s Father era), Alan Alda (M*A*S*H, natch, and Same Time Next Year… swoon…), Larry Kudlow (hosting Reich once/week), Bob Sugar (Physics’ very own)… (Dustin Hoffman and Clint Eastwood don’t necessarily count as guilty, I suppose?)
I might be able to hook you up with Reich next time he’s in town. I’ve met him, and he and one of the profs with whom I work go way back. 🙂
