rumble twit weep run
I have already shared my intense fear of earthquakes. Today’s shaker was business as usual for me — I went white, got in a doorway, then burst into tears. I happened to share the doorway with the Department Chair, who did a good job of speaking to me in a soothing tone (reserved for lunatics and crybabies), and keeping me from my usual impulse to take flight and run — where? Into the office of Quantum and Complex Dynamics? The mail room?
The only thing different about this time was the one addition to the safety procedure: twit first, ask questions later.
I learned of the quake via twitter and it scared me for similar reasons. I, too, was in the ’89 SF quake right smack downtown about the go to the underground Metro. I am sorry the experience had shaken your core, pun not totally intended. Until ’89 I used to think they were cool, now they are up there with worst fears. Hugs to you.
Just don’t hide under the paper cutter. Glad you’re OK. Mark definitely has a way about talking to people in distress… I learned that from the day that I left – I started weeping when he gave me a good-bye card, and he kept trying to talk to me as I backed out of his office. 🙂 Good guy.
BTW, your blog now keeps asking for my twitter username and password every time I refresh or revisit… 😀
Twit first, duck-n-cover later. Priorities.
