sunshine in the rain it’s so strange
In the wee early years of the 1980s, in a record store, I stumbled upon Japanese pop band The Plastics. My world changed. Then I saw “Top Secret Man” on SCTV and my world changed even more. I’m not kidding — I looked, acted, felt and thought differently after understanding there were people like The Plastics in the world. I suppose I am obligated to become the Old Fogie now and point out that this was all pre-internet, pre-YouTube, pre-global connection. To experience Japanese Pop for the first time was to receive an exotic, exciting jolt of outerspace transformation. When my best friend moved to Japan during this same time period, she got to live it. Lucky Sarah.
Plastics on YouTube:
- The Plastics sing “Copy” on Japanese TV
- The Plastics video “Top Secret Man” on SCTV (try to ignore Dave Thomas’s painful intro)
I blame my 1989-era roommate Tracy’s boyfriend Dane for stealing my Plastics albums. If you’re guilty, may Chica hunt you down.
PostScript: What a difference a good night’s sleep makes. Head has been screwed back on to straightness, and the NaBo train happily resumes its pace. Choo choo!
